Star Wars Opening Crawls



Since its debut in 1977, Star Wars has become a cultural phenomenon not just in its depiction of good over evil but also the many references it has to the world in both mythology and fact. The beauty about these films regarding a 'Galaxy far, far away' is that they open with a description known at the 'opening crawl' as to what is going on within the world of Star Wars. Personally while I am a fan of Star Wars the only films I love from it are the original films (Episodes IV, V and VI) and Episode I. However it was through the expanded universe series of novels and the game 'Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds' that I came to know that there were elements not depicted in the films. This inspired me to create opening crawls before, during and after the battle of Yavin in Episode IV where the death star was destroyed in defence of the planet moon of Yavin; BBY means before the battle of Yavin, BY evidently means the battle of Yavin and ABY means after the battle of Yavin. While the plots of Episodes I, IV, V and VI are known to most Star Wars fans, there are even more interesting stories that took place before Episode I and after Episode VI and that is what this all about




A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away....




Battle for the Moon (35 BBY)
The civilizations of the Galactic Republic are extending their reach; the Wookie transport Thalmussen penetrates the Alaris System representing Alaris Prime, a moon that is neighbour to the Wookie homeworld Kashyyyk

Bound for Alaris Prime, the transport carries villagers and warriors, all sharing hopes of colonization as with their home planet and are led by the Wookie chief Attichituk, his son Chewbacca and his nephew Shoran, having been granted colonization rights by the Republic four years earlier

But others also have designs for this world; the nefarious Trade Federation plots to ravage Alaris Prime and destroy anything that stands in their way…



The Phantom Menace (32 BBY)
Turmoil has engulfed the Galactic Republic. The taxation of trade routes to outlying star systems in in dispute

Hoping to resolve the matter with a blockade of deadly battleships, the greedy Trade Federation has stopped all shipping to the small planet of Naboo

While the Congress of the Republic endlessly debates this alarming chain of events, the Supreme Chancellor has secretly dispatched two Jedi Knights, the guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy to settle the conflict…



A New Hope (BY)
It is a period of civil war, Rebel ships striking from a hidden base have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire

During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire’s ultimate weapon, the Death Star, an armoured space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet

Pursued by the Empire’s sinister agents, Princess Leia races home aboard her starship, custodian of the stolen plans that can save her people and restore freedom to the galaxy…

 

The Empire Strikes Back (3 ABY)
It is a dark time for the Rebellion. Even though the Death Star has been destroyed, Imperial troops have driven the Rebel forces from their hidden base and pursued them across the galaxy

Evading the dreaded Imperial Starfleet, a group of freedom fighters led by Luke Skywalker has established a new secret base on the remote ice world of Hoth

The evil lord Darth Vader obsessed with finding young Skywalker has dispatched thousands of remote probes into the far regions of space… 



Return of the Jedi (4 ABY)
Luke Skywalker has returned to his home planet of Tatooine in an attempt to rescue his friend Han Solo from the clutches of the vile gangster Jabba the Hutt

Little does Luke know that the Galactic Empire has secretly begun construction on a new armoured space station, even more powerful than the first dreaded Death Star

When completed, this ultimate weapon will spell certain doom for the small band of Rebels struggling to restore freedom to the galaxy...



Liberation of confidence (4 ABY)
After the destruction of the second Death Star, the Imperial forces have scattered in a vain attempt at retreat

Taking advantage of the situation, the Rebel Alliance now the New Republic dispatches representatives to dozens of worlds to overthrow the Empire and its insidious agents

Turning their eye towards the Wookie homeworld Kashyyyk, the New Republic sends Han Solo and Chewbacca to determine what it will take to restore freedom…

The Hurricane: Fact vs Fiction

                                              Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter vs George Benton Rubin Carter, a former middleweight boxer nicknamed ‘Hurricane’ for his fighting style is one of the world’s most famous victims of injustice, having spent 18 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. He was further immortalized by the Bob Dylan song Hurricane which was sung to protest his 1967 conviction of the killings of three people in a bar, the same conviction re-imposed on Carter in 1976. Memories of my grandfather

It has been exactly a month since I lost my Grandfather, Mohan Wagh who succumbed to his battle against a stroke that consumed him late last year. I cannot believe he is gone and I am going to miss him. Trips to Mumbai, India where he and my grandmother live will not be the same for any one of us without him. Knowing my grandfather though, he would want me to carry on with life and continue to happily live it and that is what has inspired me to want to create some of the best memories I have ever had with him. I am beginning from what I can clearly remember more so than between the ages of 1 and 4 since the ones after those age gaps are clearer although I have chosen to leave some years out because they do not really count the way the mentioned ones do.
